Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook (1865–1935) was a towering figure in Jewish thought, known for his deep spirituality, poetic wisdom, and love for the Jewish people. As the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of pre-state Israel, he championed the unity of all Jews, bridging the gap between secular Zionists and religious traditionalists. His writings, filled with mystical depth, emphasized the redemptive process of the Jewish return to the Land of Israel. Rabbi Kook saw holiness in every Jew, believing that even those distant from Torah were part of a divine plan leading to national and spiritual revival.

A Story: The Love of a Nation

Once, a secular Jew approached Rabbi Kook and angrily challenged him:

“How can you love Jews who reject Torah?”

Rabbi Kook smiled and responded, “Tell me, if a person faints, do you slap him or try to revive him? The Jewish people have merely fainted spiritually. We must awaken them with love, not hate.”

This profound answer defined his approach—seeing the good in every Jew and working tirelessly to uplift, inspire, and unify the nation in faith and redemption.
